Hey Everyone!

Today I'm coming to you to talk about a game that I've been crazy about lately: Bolt Action! Bolt Action is a 28mm wargame set on the battlefields of World War 2, from the German invasion of Poland all the way to the last days of fighting in the Pacific. Produced by Warlord Games, the rules are written by Alessio Cavatore and Rick Priestley, two powerhouses of rules writing.

My first experience with Bolt Action came when my buddy Mike sold me some Americans that he didn't need (German player- BAH!). I was interested, having always loved history, and especially World War 2, I thought that it was a perfect combination of two of my loves. I was correct! My first game wasn't very historically accurate (Brits versus U.S.) but fun regardless. Since then, I've played a few more games with much more historically accurate match-ups and had fun every time.

So what makes Bolt Action cool?

1) The Order Dice System
One of my favorite parts of Bolt Action is the use of order dice to determine what order the turn goes in. Unlike games like 40k, Warmachine, or Age of Sigmar, where each player activates everything on their side and then passes to the opponent, Bolt Action works on an element of randomness. Each player puts order dice, equal to the number of their units in their force that are still active, into a bag together and draw blindly. So if you need your Pershing to move onto a hill ahead of the German Hanomag, you aren't guaranteed that you'll have that opportunity. As the game goes on and units are destroyed, dice are pulled out of the bag, making it harder to get your order dice when you need them. It's a very reactive system, and forces you to think about what you need to prioritize unlike most games.

2) The Pin System
In a real war, bullets and shells flying at your squad would make you a little hesitant to directly follow orders that might get your head taken off. Bolt Action represents this with the "pin" system. Every time you are hit at least once your unit takes a pin marker, which makes them less likely to react to orders that they are given, helping represent the chaos of war and the way real units would respond to fire. I mean, would you charge directly at an MG-42 when it has killed four of your buddies? You might, but you'd have to think about it a little
3) The Historical Campaigns
I'll admit, this one isn't for everyone. The sheer number of cool historical campaigns and scenarios makes Bolt Action one of my favorite games. As a lover of history, being able to break out my early war Americans for Operation Torch and go head to head with another player taking the mantle of Erwin Rommel is just too cool! Warlord is constantly releasing new campaigns so there's something there for just about everyone. (Including my soon to be Airborne Army!)

I hope all of these things help you understand my favorite parts of Bolt Action and why I think it is such a cool game. I feel that it has a lot to offer to everyone with an interest in gaming, but I understand that historicals aren't everyone's cup of tea. I mean, if that's the case, there's always Konflikt '47 (but that's another post).

Until next time,
Happy Hobbying!

Coming to you today to talk about a game I never thought I'd talk about on this blog: Guild Ball. But why you ask? Simply, I scoffed at Guild Ball quite a bit when I first started hearing rumblings about it (mostly from my friend Kris over at Wargamer Ramblings). A game with guilds playing soccer (football for you international folks)? What is up with that? So there are some mundane careers playing a sport. Why should I care? I also heard a lot of stuff I didn't like when I initially heard about it (though not from Kris, but some other people that I saw around the internet), basically things like "I'm switching to Guild Ball because at least it's fun, unlike Warmachine/Hordes", "I hope Guild Ball takes over, I think it is the better system." You see where I'm going with this. My first exposures (besides Kris, like I said) were not Guild Ball positive, they were Warmachine/Hordes negative. Hard to come around to a game where the vocal community is talking down on the game you hail as your favorite.

However, something changed. I stopped listening to the negative people in the community and started to look a little more at the positive aspects of the game. I started to look more at the models and found I liked more and more of the sculpts. Reading about the different playstyles of the teams, and then looking at my friend Kris' write ups about them, I started to come around to the idea of the game. Watching Battle Reports helped (are they really Battle Reports if it's not battle?).

Looking at everything, I finally decided to buy in, because I figured that it took a different slot in my gaming repertoire than 40k, or Warmachine, or Bolt Action, or... well, you get the point. I don't have a sports game. Sure, Blood Bowl is out again, and I may pick up the starter one day, but I really hate football. Not a sport I've ever liked. Soccer? Now that's a sport I've played and love to watch. So I came around to Guild Ball.

But what Guild? That was a question that was both easy and hard to answer at the same time. I always try to mix up my playstyle to an extent. For example, I've played Khador and know exactly how I don't like to play (slow and hard to kill). I love the playstyle of Circle Orboros, with movement tricks and unpredictable attacks. Cygnar is fun, as they offer both ranged and up close answers, and usually hit pretty hard when they do.

So in my decision making process I finally settled on two options: The Butchers, and their brutal damage output and ability to make other players bleed on the pitch. All of this was stacked on to the models with team wide buffs that could be doled out, making everyone more kill-ey. It was brutal and efficient and I liked the idea.

The other major contender for my first team was that of the Union. Stabby, like that of the Butchers, but with a more "We all work alone to win the game". This was tempting to me, along with the fact that if I ever picked up other teams I could use them in those line ups.

So, after a couple of weeks of thinking, I decided to go with the Butchers. Went down to my LGS, money in hand... and they didn't have the Butchers. But they did have the Union! So I went with them. Christmas came around and I ordered most of the rest of the (then) team. I have to say, I like the way they play, and I tend to play the takeout game. However, thanks to some lucky trades on reddit, I was able to get a full Butcher line up. Now the only decision is which one to take when I go play.

So there you have it, how I got into Guild Ball. I found that I really enjoyed the mechanics of the game. It's modern, it's quick, and most importantly, fun.

Next time, I'll be starting a new project to get ready for Gen Con!

Until next time, Happy Hobbying! Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14311156675349263438noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7235141082976135211.post-2780038956534248992016-11-29T22:51:00.003-08:002016-11-29T22:51:53.565-08:00The Post That Will Lose Me Some Readers Hello Everyone!

Today, I've decided to talk about a project I'm working on that many will find disdainful, abhorrent, atrocious, and blasphemous.

That's right, I'm starting Warhammer: Age of Sigmar.

"But why? That game is the game that took the place of Warhammer Fantasy, the greatest game of all time!"

I understand your point there, but let me make my case. I've never played a moment of Warhammer Fantasy Battle, though I understand its long history is something that many hold near and dear to their hearts. Had I been conscious of my love of wargaming at a younger age I dare say I would have given it a try. However, that's not the case. My history with Fantasy was a short-lived and half-hearted one. One time, while I was in Lexington, Kentucky, I went to the local Games Workshop store, and, noticing the fantasy section the shop owner had set up, became quite enamored with the Vampire Counts models I saw there. With my love of old horror, and the classic idea of hordes of skeletons and zombies, driven by powerful necromancers and aristocratic vampires, it wasn't a hard stretch for me to become interested. (Author's Note: Vampires shouldn't sparkle. They certainly shouldn't live in Washington. Though they totally could, I like mine to live in old castles somewhere in Eastern Europe.)

So, I purchased a box of skeletons and a Wight King and left the store, eventually ordering the army book on eBay, and buying another box of skeletons and a Terrorgheist down the line when the opportunities presented themselves. But I never fully committed to a Fantasy army. It was simply something I didn't feel like I wanted to do. The entire idea of the strict rules for building a list, let alone playing with said list, seemed a bit daunting. The monetary aspect, too, was a factor. Fantasy required many more minis than I had the means to buy at the time (and probably still now).

In the end, I let fantasy sit on the shelf, collecting dust, but not really going anywhere. In fact, I almost sold it off a few times. Then the End Times came out. I was impressed with the entire idea of these huge apocalyptic clashes of the different forces, with these huge, gorgeous (or disgusting, in the case of the Glottkin) models coming out. Still, it just didn't feel right. Too much was required. I'd need movement trays. I'd need at least 2-3 more units of skeletons, and that's not all. I still didn't do much with it.

And like that, the End Time were over. The Old World was gone, and the Age of Sigmar had begun. While I didn't play Fantasy, I was kinda upset. Though I hadn't pulled the trigger, I'd never be able to. Square bases were replaced with round, like 40K. I didn't like the game on principle. No points? 4 pages of rules? What is this, happy fun time make believe game? With no restrictions, things will get bonkers! I vowed to never play Age of Sigmar. I'd play 9th Age with my buddy Kris (Whose blog you can read at WargamerRamblings). I'd keep the square base, and vow to keep my precious undead off the evil that was the round base.

How foolish I was. And so here I am, a few months ago, salivating over the Stormcast Eternals. while also giving a strong eye to the Khorne Bloodbound models that have been coming out at this point. I still am hesitant, however. But then I start watching battle reports, and listen to people reviewing the game. I see more and more of the minis. The General's Handbook is released, and suddenly structure has been given to that without restraint. I start reading White Dwarf articles. I get the free Slaughterpriest mini. And like that, I am interested. I buy the Storm of Sigmar set on my way back home from my honeymoon. I get the "Getting Started" magazine with the free Liberator.

I start talking to Kris about getting into the game, and he says he too has been looking at the game. Our mutual friend, Clayton, who was introduced to me via Beyond the Gates of Antares, is a proud player of the Dwarven factions. My buddy Ronnie loves Age of Sigmar. And all the while, the Starter set is gleaming at me from the shelf. (Have I mentioned I love Starter sets? Slap the words Starter Set on anything and I'll probably buy it).

So here I am, entranced with a game I so vehemently opposed when it came out. But why? Firstly, I said that I don't have a long and storied history of playing Fantasy. Secondly, even if I did, nobody I know plays it. Most have moved on to Age of Sigmar or quit entirely. And lastly, I just love the models and the game types I can do. If I want to throw a list together of Destruction, Chaos, and Death for an Open game against a buddy I can. If I want to throw my Tomb Kings in with my Vampire Counts I can, and just call it Death. Wood Elves and Stormcast Eternals? No problem. I have many more options now in most cases, and thusly I can make the game how I want it to.

So, getting started I've decided on a few things. Firstly, I'm constructing an Open play list that is essentially just the forces of evil. Goblins, Skeletons, Chaos, Orcs, etc. If it's evil, it's in the list.

Secondly, and most pertinent to this post, and thus the next few months of my life, I am going to make a 2000 point list for a tournament coming up in Gate City, Va, in February. This is a more strict idea for list building, so it will be the Chaos Grand Alliance, with a veritable smattering of Daemons, Skaven, and Khorne Bloodbound. However, I also need to have this painted by then. Painting is not fully required I don't believe, just encouraged, but I will not show up to an event with unpainted models (at least not this one). So I'm hoping this will give me an excuse to play games as practice and and also paint some minis. I started painting tonight, so we'll see where it goes. Either way, I plan to update y'all as the project goes forward, and I need to set a plan for myself to get as many of them done over the winter break from classes as I can. We'll see how it goes, and see if I make it on February 25th.

Either way, I believe that Age of Sigmar is a good thing, if not everyone, I certainly think it is good for me and how I like to game. The rules are much simpler, and thus make it much easier for me to deal with. I like the simplicity, the simpler the better (in some cases).

I hope I've not gotten rid of too many readers because of this.

Until next time,

Happy Hobbying

P.S. Hobby wise, I've cut up a bunch of styrofoam for generic ruins, covering the, with gesso, and spray priming. Getting good results, and my terrain box is already doubling in size. I have also been working on my Gates of Antares models, trying to complete my entire force by year's end. I should be able to make it (hopefully). I have also started the process of converting my entire Warhammer 40,000 collection into one singular force, through converting my Chaos Marines to Black Legion, with support from my Mechanicus models (now Dark Mechanicum) and a contingent of Traitor Guard, all supported by my Chaos Daemons (which will double as my Age of Sigmar list!). I've still been working on building up my Cygnar collection, and look forward to some games in the near future, playing either Cygnar or Circle. Either way, it's been a busy month not only for hobby, but also for school and life. That's called being a wargamer though.

Sorry to take so long in between posts, especially given that I'm in the middle of a series, but I've been incredibly busy with school. Given it is my last year and I am doing Senior research on top of a full courseload, while working, I have been incredibly busy. As a result, my hobby time, and thusly my blog time, has taken a huge hit. I also got married on the 24th of this month (YAY) so I was very much preoccupied with wedding planning and preparation.

I just wanted to let everyone know that I haven't forgotten about you. You are still important to me. Like the late great Douglas MacArthur said "I Shall Return."

I will be continuing my blog series on getting into Warmachine/Hordes, but I wanted to hop in for a quick post about my current hobby projects/interests.

1)Warmachine/Hordes
I'm still working on building my Cygnar army, as I'd like to really delve deep into a new faction in Mk3. Kara Sloan was recently purchased, along with a Hunter, and I will be ordering some Trenchers along with other pieces very soon. I also want to start building a Tanith list as I really feel like she would be a fun and versatile caster, and I need to get Reeves and a few other pieces to make the list I want to build work. Wurmwood, a caster I never had much interest in before is a purchase I'll need to make soon, as he seems to be the dominant Circle caster for now at the very least. Priority goes toward painting Tanith and her box, and getting my Trollbloods box done for Press Gang purposes.

2)Bolt Action/Konflikt 47
Having spent the last 2 weeks watching Band of Brothers and The Pacific, I've been smacked in the face with a desire to play and paint some more BA. For the most part I need to get the rest of the paints required for my Starter box, sand the bases, and then prime them up so I can start painting. I'd also like to buy some Airborne troops in the future and get around to buying the starter kit for Konflikt 47.

3) MERCS
I had no interest in this game a month ago. Then my buddies went to Gen Con and came back with a few more factions worth of models. We ended up playing a 5 person deathmatch game (which was stolen from me at the last second) and I had a blast. The game is quick and fun, and once you pick a faction you can buy the entire faction for 35 dollars. Pretty good deal if you ask me. I think I'll get Texico (It's Hiiigh Noooon) but I may consider eventually picking up another. For that price, it's quite worth it.

4) Frostgrave
My gaming group and I have been discussing a campaign of this for some time, and the ability to use whatever models you want, paired with the ease of finding cheap Reaper minis, has made me put that on the table as well. Another small skirmish game but fantasy as opposed to scifi, it seems like a fun and interesting game that could be played within a larger story.

As you can see, I have a lot of ideas floating around in my head. If you have any suggestions on how I can make any of these particular things happen any easier they would be appreciated, as I am just a broke college student with a love of gaming.

Anyway, that was my quick post to update everyone, and the fourth part of Getting Started will be up soon, I've been very busy with classes starting back and helping move my fianceé.

Until next time,

Hi Everyone!

Sorry it's been a while, but I've had a hectic few weeks here at home and I've found myself barely having time to even open my computer, let alone write anything. (Moving sucks!) then I had the setback of having had the entire blog typed and losing it all in a saving mishap. But I've finally got it done, and ready for you to read it.

So, without further ado, the Warmachine factions, broken down by play style to help you pick the right faction for you.

1) Cygnar
Ahh, the Swans. Fighting enemies on all sides, Cygnar is forced into having the best technology possible. Cygnar is a faction with a lot of options when it comes to the tabletop. Cygnar likes a combined arms approach, being able to hit at range very well and doing pretty good in melee. Cygnar Heavy jacks hit like a freight train, and their light jacks have a lot of options as well. Cygnar's biggest problem is dying, and they tend to make up for that with more defensive buffs. They also like electricity, so many things can do electrical attacks which can bounce to other people!

2) The Protectorate of Menoth
Ahh, the Menites. The crazy religious zealots that follow the Lawgiver Menoth and separated from Cygnar to create a theocracy and wage holy war. The Protectorate is all about denial. In fact, this is why my buddy Kris plays Menoth. For him, there is a great joy in being able to say "Nope, you can't do that." Menoth will shut you down, and they will survive. They have a strong theme of Fire, so many of their casters can put out the Fire continuous effect and keep it going. Menoth jacks tend to deal with many different threats. Units are more elite, and support units are the bread and butter of the Protectorate.

3) Khador
The Khadoran Empire is the most imperialist of the factions vying for power in the Iron Kingdoms, often invading the land of others in hopes of rebuilding their once great empire. As far as looks go, they are Russians with steam-powered robots. Khador is a hard country to live in, and this is really reflected in the army. From troops to jacks, Khador is incredibly tough when it comes to standing up to damage. Khador jacks have all around the highest base armor of all the factions, and more hit boxes than most other heavy jacks. Khadoran troops are even hard to hurt, often times having higher armor values than most infantry, and they have mass conscription in Khador, so expect to see a lot of high armor troops. Khador is all about surviving longer than the opponent, as they can take a lot of heat and keep standing. Even Khadoran Warcasters are made of tough stuff and can take (and give) a beating. Khador will take you to task in melee, but will falter at range, and take a while to get across the table.

4) Cryx
The nightmare kingdom of Cryx is an empire made up of islands populated by the undead and the living that aren’t accepted by anyone else. Cryx is a debuff machine, and their casters are spell heavy. They will be throwing spells onto the enemy in hopes of weakening their opponent, either by dropping one, or multiple stats. Cryx has infantry units that aren’t very elite, typically making up for that with more models. To keep itself casting all the spells it wants to cast, Cryx will usually collect soul tokens which turn into extra focus, meaning you often have a lot more resources than your opponent. Ghosts and other undead models abound so Cryx has a lot of ways to get Ghostly and Incorporeal special effects (which change where they can move and how and what can hit them, respectively). Cryx jacks aren’t the heftiest either.
5) The Retribution of Scyrah
The nation of Ios is made up of elves, whose gods are slowly dying. The Iosans believe that human use of magic is to blame, and thusly they have decided to wage war in hopes of saving their gods. Retribution has a strong theme of battlefield manipulation so they will spend a lot of time rearranging the battlefield how they like it. Also, Retribution is no slack when it comes to ranged attacks, oftentimes hitting consistently at range. Retribution units are pretty elite though in whatever they are made for so they can easily handle threats in any mode. Retribution heavies are also good at what they do, but each jack is unique in the threats it presents.

5) The Convergence of Cyriss
A cult that worships the clockwork god Cyriss, who is dedicated to mathematics and order, the Convergence of Cyriss operates very much in that theme. More than any other army, Convergence is all about synergy and the order of operations. Efficiency is the name of the game, and this is reflected on the tabletop, as Convergence jacks can induct focus from others near them, meaning a few focus can power all of your jacks for the turn! This also plays into their order of operations playstyle, as activating the wrong jack at the wrong time could leave you high and dry when you need it. Convergence units and solos all provide support and answers to threats, but each are highly specialized, so they may not work in all situations. Warcaster choice is also important, as Convergence jacks copy the melee and ranged attack values of their controller! A hard army to pick up, but rewarding if you can learn it’s unique style.

6) Mercenaries
The Iron Kingdoms are constantly at war, and thusly some make a career out of being soldiers for hire. In most cases, people will field mercenaries in their other factions to fill out roles that their faction may not normally have access too. However, you can also field just an army of Mercenaries. Mercenaries tend to fall into 2 categories, with those being the human mercs and the Rhulic mercs. Rhulic mercs are dwarves, and must use a different set of warjacks than the human mercs. The Mercenary faction is by far the most diverse, having a plethora of options and models that one can use. Rhulic models have a mining theme, whereas a lot of the humans have a nautical, pirate theme. This faction has many options to choose from, so it’s hard to narrow it down to one playstyle.

So there you have it, a quick idea of each of the factions in Warmachine that you can choose from. If you have any questions, comments, or would like to tell me how wrong I am about your faction, comment below!

Thanks again, and next time we will move on to the factions of Hordes!

Until then,

Happy Hobbying!

Today I'm going to give you an overview of Warmachine and Hordes, and how the two are alike and how they are different. So buckle up!

First, we'll go with Warmachine as it was the first system to be introduced. Warmachine was released all the way back in 2003, but has went through 2 previous iterations, with the newest and current edition, MK3, being released on June 29th of this year.

But what sets Warmachine apart from those other miniatures games?

That's a great question, and one I love to answer.

Essentially, the entire idea behind Warmachine is that you control an army and take the role of the Warcaster. A Warcaster is a highly trained soldier-sorcerer who uses spells and magic weapons to defeat their enemies and lead their army to victory. Did I mention that they also use their minds to control giant steam powered war machines (hah!) called Warjacks? Because they do. And it's awesome.

So essentially, a Warcaster is the model that you pick to lead your army and your 'jacks. Caster selection is important. Each caster has their own unique style of play. You can have the same army every game and just change out the Warcaster and see a huge amount of variety.

Warcasters rely on a thing called Focus to do their thing, however, and find it hard to get the most of their jacks and armies if they don't have it. Focus is arcane energy that helps the caster cast spells and make their jacks go. For example, if I'm playing a Khador army with Kommander Sorscha, I have 6 Focus to work with every turn. I can use this focus to cast spells, like Wind Rush and others, or I can allocate it to my jacks (who now, thanks to Mk3, get a free focus as long as they are close enough to her) to run or charge or buy more attacks. Casters can also buy attacks with these points, but you only have a limited number every turn, so you have to think ahead on how to spend them. It's all about resource allocation.

However, while your Caster is the most powerful piece of your army, it is also what can bring it down. You see, an important part of Warmachine is that of the assassination. The easiest way to explain this is through an example like Chess. If the king is taken, you lose. Same thing goes in Warmachine. You can be winning 4-0 on control points in a scenario, but you can lose because you stepped out from behind the wrong wall and got a charging Jack to the face.

Beyond 'jacks, armies are made up of units of troops, mounted and unmounted, and solos, which are single models that are more powerful than a single unit model but less powerful than a warcaster. Each of these selections in a list is important, as it determines how your game plays, and how well it goes.

Here's some examples of the Warmachine Aesthetic:

So there you have it: Warmachine is all about combat between 2 armies controlled by warcasters and made up of warjacks, units, and individual models called solos, all on a 4x4 tabletop.

Now to Hordes!

Hordes, in many ways, is very similar to Warmachine. Units and solos make up the rank and file of the armies, but the game is really focused on Warlocks and their Warbeasts.

Warlocks are magic users who, similarly to Warcasters, are the keystones of their armies whose death means defeat. However, instead of using their Focus to control mechanikal contstructs, the Warlocks use their bond with their Warbeasts to power their magic.

Warbeasts are angry, furious creatures that tower over regular people, and can tear a warjack to pieces in seconds if given the chance. Warlocks tap into that Primal rage, called Fury, to cast spells and protect themselves.

Whereas Warcasters must give Focus to their jacks, Warlocks must leach Fury from their Warbeasts to maintain the amount needed to cast their spells. They can also use this Fury to transfer damage to their warbeasts, and boost their attacks and damage rolls. Fury, once it comes off a Warbeast, is quite similar to Focus in how it operates. Every Warbeast produces Fury, and they do this through forcing. However, if they produce too much, they can frenzy and you will lose control of that beast for the turn. Whereas Warmachine is a game of resource allocation, Hordes is a game of Risk management. Run too cool and you don't have enough. Run too hot and you may get charged and attacked by your own beast. The choice is yours.

Hordes is the natural answer to the industrial theme of Warmachine. Warmachine is a steampunk world of machinery mixed with magic. Huge cities and trains. Hordes is about the wild parts of the World, with nature magic and beasts aplenty.

Here's a good cross section of the Hordes aesthetic:

I hope that the two little descriptions above help explain the basic ideas behind the game, though this was never intended to be a rules demo. I simply meant to get the basic flavors of each game across, and I hope that you've seen that. For my next post, I will be doing a short Faction overview for each faction in Warmachine (the post after that will be Hordes) in order to help you pick which faction is best for you.

Until next time,

Happy Hobbying!
Hi Everyone!

Today, we are going to talk about a
subject that is very near and dear to my heart. If you are reading this, it either means
that you follow my blog regularly, or you've come to find yourself interested
in Warmachine or Hordes. There are a few ways people get into the
community, but I'll add in a personal anecdote for this one. Back in the fall
of 2013, I became interested in tabletop wargaming, and started by getting into
Warhammer 40,000 with Chaos Space Marines. My local store, Cavalier Comics, had
a large selection of 40k models and books, and I found myself perusing them
almost daily to find my next purchase. However, tucked away right beside the 40k
models was a colorful assortment of boxes. Looking at the boxes I saw what
looked like Russian robots, marshmallow giants, werewolves, and demonic looking
chicken things. At first, the look of everything kind of threw me off. I
was pretty used to the grimdark look of 40k, so at first I was taken aback at
the look of the models. I looked at it, thought it was not my type of game
based on looks alone, and kept on. So, for the next year, I kept buying,
building, and promising myself I'd paint 40k models. However, in the January of
2015, I saw a poster advertising for a Warmachine/Hordes League at my LGS. I
was interested. At this point, I'd only ever played one game of 40k, and a
loose one at that where I kind of learned the rules. Talking to Mychaela (my
fianceé, in case you are new) we decided that we would check it out. She liked
some of the models, and they had grown on me, so we thought we would at least
show up, watch a few games, and then see if we wanted to join. So, the day of the league came. We both
had ideas of starter boxes in our heads in case we wanted to join. I'd get the
Khador one if it was cool and Mychaela would get the Convergence one. We walk
in, and there's a good sized group there. Including a girl! (Mychaela thought
she'd be the only one there.) Almost immediately, we were approached by
two guys who introduced themselves as Mike and Kris. They chatted us up for a
minute and offered to teach us how to play the game. Mychaela and I were unsure
as to whether or not we should, but they convinced us. They let us borrow some
models and taught us the game as we played. Kris helped Mychaela and Mike
helped me. I played Khador and Mychaela proxied Kris' Menoth as Cyriss. The
game ended up with Sorscha assassinating Syntherion, but it was just a game
between Kris and Mike with us moving the pieces around. The first, fateful game.

I'm not sure what happened, but I was
hooked. In fact, we both were. I bought my battle box that day. We joined the
league, and we were the new additions that year. Since then, I've grown my
Khador army quite a bit (thanks to an online trade), started a Circle Orboros
army (my faction, hands down) and I’m starting a Cygnar army today
(shortly after this is punlished I’ll be buying the MK3 battle boxes. I’ve led
a Journeyman League, and I’m doing another in the fall. I’ve also become a
Press Ganger for Privateer Press, and I’m working to grow the community in my
area even farther. Now you know my story, so it’s time to get you started with yours.

I know it's been a while, but my semester just ended, and the last 3 weeks were pretty busy, so I didn't quite have time to write anything other than papers. So, what's been going on?

For starters, our Warmachine League ended after many weeks of worry on my part, but everyone seemed to have a great time. Most game points and the Destroyer Patch went to yours truly, and the Paint patch went to eJosh, who painted all but one model of the Khador army he bought.

The final league day was on a Sunday, and my final game of the League was against Mike and his Legion in a Circle v. Legion warbeast heavy game (I did take some gallows Groves and 2 units of Shifting Stones, but they were mostly used for target practive, however they did help control a zone for scenario points. I played Kromac1, and didn't really expect much. Everyone hopes to beat Mike, but Mike is the guy to beat in our gaming group. He took out my 2 heavies pretty easily, but I assassinated one of the Twins to win on Scenario by dominating with Kromac (Thanks Beast Form!)

Overall, it was a fun league, and I learned a lot. I learned how to be a better player (just in time for Mk3 to knock me back down a peg), and I learned a love of an army that I had only looked at in passing before. Here's hoping Mk3 will be good (or not entirely bad) to Circle.

I learned how annoying Trolls are thanks to eSam and his ability to roll Tough like nobody's business and also slam everything. EVERYTHING.

I learned how stupid Mk2 Cryx is. And by stupid I mean stupid good. All thanks to Mychaela and Kris, who never ceased to amaze me with another trick they had up their sleeves.

I learned that Legion can kill you super good. I mean super good. And how great of a spell Flashing Blade is on a Weapon Master. Thanks Mike for killing my Stalker, Gorax, and Krueger in a row!

I learned that you should never, ever, ever, give Sorscha an opening to assassinate you. Don't. Just don't. eJosh taught me that one when I stepped out from behind a building. (The game was going pretty well too.)

I learned that huge Elephant things can have Counter Charge. And if they do, it hurts. pSam showed me the error of my ways with a misplaced Stalker. I also learned to not give up when someone smacks you too hard at the start. You can still win with Lightning.

I learned that the Black 13th can shoot through everything and you aren't safe. Nope. You aren't. (Okay, not everything, but dang.) Also, I learned that an auto hit pow 14 electrical damage roll hurts. And that a half inch in this game can ruin your chances of winning. Thanks Bernie!

I learned that Retribution can shoot you. And shoot you good. Oh, and you can't charge me this turn. Yes, seriously. No charges. I'm going to shoot you from this hill now. Large based? Even better. All thanks to Courtney.

I learned that people can come together to help a guy start a new hobby. All thanks to Gabe being suckered in, and then having 3 people offer to help him get his models together in the store so he could play that day.

I learned that sometimes gaming isn't just about the games you play, but also the people that you meet and the friends you make, and how the fun doesn't have to end once you are done playing. There's still Chinese food to be eaten.

Overall, I enjoyed my time as League Leader, and I look forward to our next league, this time in Mk3. I can't wait to see what it has in store.

Until next time,

Happy Hobbying!

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14311156675349263438noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7235141082976135211.post-54701065943417558232016-04-07T20:19:00.000-07:002016-04-07T20:19:06.427-07:00Some Words on Assembly Hello everyone!

Today I'm going to talk about assembly, and what it means to you.

Now, in this hobby, everyone must do some sort of assembly at one point or another.
(Unless they only buy fully assembled armies of eBay.)
It's a necessary evil in the hobby. I say evil because sometimes it's just not fun. At all. Like today, as I type this, I'm currently angry at my Circle Wold Guardian model who may or may not be finished soon because his arms are too heavy to stay on his body.

But that's my problem. I won't worry you all with that.

In assembly, there are some issues that we face.

One issue is that of the instructions. Sometimes we break open a box and find that the instructions are clear, with good pictures. However, sometimes, we open the box to find the Greek and Japanese alphabets, mixed with wingdings and numbers, are set beside fuzzy pictures of what we aren't quite sure are legs or hotdogs.

"I'm not sure if these directions are just unclear, or if I've just had a stroke."

Sometimes we don't even get directions at all, and are forced to google pictures of the model put together and hope we get it right.

Sometimes we get directions, but we just don't read them (as is often my problem). This leads to a unique situation where the model is incorrectly built, but it's already glued, and you have no one to blame but yourself. Always read the directions carefully.

Another problem is that of glue. What glue to use is really the modeler's preference, but different types of adhesives work for different projects. Super glue works really well for general assembly of both metal and plastic minis. I prefer Loctite Professional Liquid. For about 6 bucks you can easily glue any piece you need to glue in seconds. Including your fingers! That's one of my biggest grievances with super glue. I tend to glue my fingers to myself, to my model, or to my cat if she decides that she wants to be petted halfway through assembly even though she hasn't even acknowledged my existence for the last 8 hours.

Plastic glue is also useful if you want to have some workability while the glue dries, like putting tank bodies together. It actually fuses the plastic by melting it though, so any misplaced glue can look like someone got to close to a Meltagun.

Epoxies are really good for larger applications, as they tend to handle weight really well. They also stand up much better to the cold, unlike your supper glue which will become more brittle in the cold and snap easier. (Which is a great way to break apart super glued models, but remember not to try it with epoxy or plastic glue. You'll just break the model, or your wrist if you are really unlucky.)

So, as I said earlier, assembly is a wild ride sometimes, but a necessary part of our hobby. So, grab your tools, break out the glue, and open up one of those 5 boxes of minis on your backlog and get going.

Until next time,

No battle report today (though I've had a game I've needed to write up for a week now). Instead, I'd like to talk to you about how top keep motivated on your hobby projects. Whether it's terrain building for your next game, basecoating a Warjack, or trying to assemble that 8th unit of Imperial Guard, we all have to get the projects done. Everyone should want to play with painted models. Everyone. Not everyone does, but at the end of the day everyone should strive towards that goal.

So how should we stay working?

This is one of the most important questions you can ask yourself. How can you stay motivated? Signing up for tourneys that require painted minis? Not a bad idea. A crash course, but hey, whatever works, right? Listening to podcasts related to the hobby? Not a bad idea either, and I'll talk more about that later.

So now, I'll give you some tricks I use to stay motivated.

1) Stay Thinking About the Projects You Are Working On
This sounds easy enough, but too often we find ourselves wanting to start that next box of minis as opposed to finishing the edge highlighting on our Heldrake. Truthfully, we just need to focus our attention to one thing. It's better to have 6 painted models on a table rather than 30 half painted ones. Always try to have a single hobby task in your head at once, and see it all the way out.

2) Schedule Hobby Time
This is one of the easiest ways I know of to keep painting. Take 15 minutes a day and work on boots, fur, helmets, highlighting, base coating, or whatever it may be. Just set aside a little time. Trust me, it will add up. I first heard of this method via The Independent Characters, my favorite 40K podcast (Who recently came back on the air after a hiatus!) This method changed my hobby life. I can't always get the 15 in, but every day I do things get better and better.
On the other hand, you can always do "hobby days" where you try to get with your gaming buddies and shoot the breeze while painting or modeling. This isn't something I've done before, but I like the idea.

3)Paint The Boring Stuff First
Paint the 30 Cultists before painting that Maulerfiend. Paint your winter guard before painting the Spriggan. These things will help, as the you'll force yourself to get through everything you don't want to paint as much before you get to the things you do.

4) Look For Inspiration
Look at forums for paint jobs. Look at hobby magazines. Ask your buddies what projects they are working on. Get a vision in your head for what you want your army to look like, then make your army look that way.

and finally,

5) Don't Get Frustrated
This is a hobby. This is your hobby.Hobbies are not requirements in life. They are additional. Things we do for fun. So when you just can't seem to get the green to go on correctly between the gold detail on Krueger's armor, and you are ready to just stop altogether, take a step back. Relax. Breath. The model will get painted. It's just going to take a bit of work. But that's okay.

I hope that this helps some, as we all struggle sometimes with hobby motivation.

Until next time,

Today has me playing eJosh again with his Khador. My list is the same 15 point list I've been using, and his list has him adding a War Dog to his Khador battle box.

We decided to go with a table that looked like a small town with copses of trees. Here it is from both of our sides:

As you can see, Josh went for the cover the building provided, and I set myself up to use either the building or the forest as a screen for shots or charges, and hoped I could let him step into the big open killzone in the middle and take him out.

Josh went first, putting his jacks into the open area in front of the building with the War Dog and Sorscha moving up behind, casting Fog of War and trying to keep safe from any spells I might sling.

My turn was all about moving up, putting the Blackclad, Stone Keeper, and Shifting Stones into the forest. The Warpwolf and Gorax moved up behind the Forest, with the Warpwolf toeing into the triangle made by the Shifting Stones. The Warpwolf riled for 1 and ran, and the Gorax ran to reach these positions. Krueger flew up behind, casting Storm Wall, and the Gallows Grove strangely grew between the building and the forest.

Josh moved his Destroyer up, getting closer to make sure he could get range on my Gallows Grove. The attack hit, but his damage roll was just bad enough that it stayed alive with one box. That was close. Sorscha and the War Dog stayed in the back, having just allocated 2 to the Destroyer. THe Juggernaut moved to the side, getting in position to come in on my left side.

My turn had the Gallows Grove popping up nearer to the Destroyer. Krueger then went, channeling Gallows through the Gallows Grove, putting a few points of damage on it with a boost. Krueger then telekinesised it, pulling it a little closer and turning it around. Then he casted Lightning Strike on the Warpwolf Stalker. The Blackclad moved up to spray the jack, but barely did anything. The Same was true for the Stone Keeper (Who shot during the Stones activation, but it's easier to lump it in here), but he hit a little harder. Then the Gorax went, being forced to cast Primal on the Warpwolf. The Shifting Stones went next, teleporting the Stalker and letting the Keeper spray. The Stalker teleported directly behind the Destroyer. He activated, warping Strength. He attacked the first time, hitting, and doing straight dice, putting a lot of damage on the jack. He then hit with his claw, doing still a large amount of damage. He did 2 more attacks with his Sword, boosting one, and killed the jack. He then sprinted off to the right to keep away from the Juggernaut.

Josh then went, giving 3 to his Juggernaut. Sorscha casted Boundless Charge on the Juggernaut (a spell I'd honestly forgotten about) and retreated behind the building. The Juggernaut charged the Warpwolf. Luckily, he missed once, and then had a bad roll, even on the boost. The Warpwolf survived, taking only a bit of damage. Josh's rolls were killing him.

My turn came, and the Warpwolf frenzied. He did some damage on the Juggernaut, softening him up pretty well. Krueger moved to the side, casting telekinesis on the Juggernaut, needed a good roll on the boost. He hit. moved him out then turned him around. Then I casted Gallows, pulling him in closer. I then shot him, doing a little damage. The Blackclad Wayfarer moved and sprayed, doing a little more damage. The Shifting Stones activated, shifting the Gorax behind the Juggernaut. The Stone Keeper sprayed, doing a little bit of damage. Then the Gorax went, hoping to do as much as it could. It luckily hit pretty hard, leaving the Juggernaut with one point.

Josh went, letting the Juggernaut activate first. He turned around, hoping to put some damage on the Gorax. With both arms crippled, and no cortex to boost, the Juggernaut had a hard time, but put a little hurting on the Gorax. Sorscha went next, with Wind Rush to get out in the open. Then she feated, freezing everything except Krueger. Josh then tried to charge Krueger, but was not able to see him due to the Gallows Grove blocking Line of Sight. She charged the Warpwolf instead, swinging a few times and hurting him.

I went, shifting the stones up and letting the Stone Keeper do a spray. It hit and killed the War Dog, bringing Sorscha's defense down. Krueger TK'd Sorscha, almost missing, and turned her around. He then shot at her, doing a little bit of damage. He casted Primal on the Stalker. The Stalker then shook the stationary, and proceeded to Warp Strength and swing in for the win, needing to boost to hit. He also boosted for damage. Sorscha went down.

Overall, we had a great game, and I was glad to see Josh play the list I played for Week 2 last league, as I love Sorscha with a War Dog. It did hurt my heart to kill the War Dog though. (Sorry little guy!)

Until next time,
Hi everyone!

Quick post today, as I've got to make sure I get the game I'm playing against eJosh gets put up soon.

So here's some lessons I've learned this week:

1) Order of Activation is Important, so THINK
Yes, I know this is one is a basic thing everyone should learn, but it's nice to be reminded of it every now and then. When you need your model to move up, cast a spell, or do a special ability, you need to make sure everything stacks just right so your turns will go your way.

2) Make Sure You Know The Rules for Your Models

This is another basic thing, but knowing EXACTLY how a model works can help immensely. It makes a huge difference.

3) Know the Other Army

This is something that is new for me, as I never really looked into the other persons strategy before. Why I hadn't done it before I have no idea. It helps to know exactly what the other person can do, and the best way to counter it. I always look into the models my opponents bring now.

4) Make Sure to Know Your Distances

Measure your control range as a proxy for distance measurements. Remeasure your control every time you move your warlock/caster. Learn how to eyeball distances. Don't get caught coming up short.

5) Circle May Be My Army
I've played Khador before, and I've looked into other armies, but I think Circle is my army. The army plays exactly as I'd like it, and I feel as though I have enough options to take on most things. Something major would have to change for me to change my mind about the army. Plus, I love the whole idea behind them, the models, and the color scheme.

Anyway, there are some things I've learned, so until next time,

Saturday started our second week of league, and also let us expand our lists a little farther. So this week, given that I limited myself the first week, I got to bring quite a bit more.
Here's my 15 point list:
Krueger the Stormlord
Gorax
Warpwolf Stalker
Shifting Stones with Stone Keeper
Blackclad Wayfarer
Gallows Grove

My list is a lot more filled out now, and I feel that I definitely have more movement options than I did before, and the Gallows Grove allows Krueger to sit farther back and sling his spells without having to worry as much about getting killed. Overall, I am very pleased with the list and what it offers, but can't wait to add more and see where it goes. Overall, I think that Circle may be "My Army" (but I'll go into that later.)

Since I had a Geology trip on Saturday, I only got in 2 games, against Kris and pSam.

Kris was first, and his week 2 list was the exact same list that he used the first week.

We played on a board that was very urban, with lots of buildings to hide behind.

I focused on moving Krueger up the center of the board behind the building, and also wanted to keep my Shifting Stones in the center so I could put my Warpwolf through the building in case he got too close to it. The Gallows Grove was out to the left, lining up to cast spells towards his army around the building. I also made sure to keep my Druid Wilder somewhere he could support, and Krueger casted Storm Wall every turn to stop any shots from the Leviathan.

Kris spent most of his time attempting to get to me, and trying to set up his Leviathan to shoot at Krueger. Most of the shots did not have range thanks to Storm Wall.

On my second turn I pulled the biggest stupid I've ever pulled, and I believe it's what cost me the game. I activated Krueger, moved him up, and realized that I should have moved the Gallows Grove first. If I had, I could have teleported Scaverous, turned him around, casted Primal on the Stalker, and teleported him in with the Shifting Stones for a turn 2 assassination. But I forgot to do that. Oh well. I decided to feat to keep some stuff back, and I regretted that later too.

Kris decided to move as close as he could, still failing to do anything with the shots.

The next turn, I move up cast telekinesis on the Stalker to move it closer, then spend the rest on various other spells, teleport the Stalker in to kill his Leviathan, and hope it kills it. It does, and I leave the stalker there to threaten Scavvy.

At this point, Kris decided to go all in. Kris moves up his arc nodes, pops his feat, then tries for a magic assassination. He needed good rolls on everything, and he somehow got them. With no fury to transfer, I lost the game.

The game against eSam went a little worse, and a little better.

Skorne always worries me because they, like Circle, are incredibly fast, and Skorne tends to hit like a freight train when they get into combat.

The table was set up nicely for me, and I felt like I had good avenues to follow.

This is the table very, very late in the game. (Spoiler alert!)

I focused on moving my army and shifting stones and Beasts up toward the forest, hoping I could use it as cover for a teleport later, with Krueger adding to movement and other things. I don't use Storm Wall against Sam as he hardly ever has range, so that would be wasted fury.

Sam moves up towards me, putting himself in a position to get close and put a hurting on my stuff.

Next turn, my Gallows Grove moves onto the hill, hoping to put itself in range for a telekinesis. The Gorax runs up behind Krueger, riling for 3.
I decide to activate Krueger, and try to TK Sam's warlock around. It works, but I had to pay double fury for it, leaving Krueger with not much, and not enough to do any more. The Warpwolf is teleported by the stones, getting him behind Naaresh, and he proceeds to swing at him, doing tons of damage, but Naaresh keeps transferring. I fail to kill him.

Sam goes, and kills my Warpwolf handily. He also moves up to get into a good position to charge Krueger the next turn.

My turn starts, and I leach 3 fury off of the Gorax, leaving him with one. I forgot the ability of the Shifting Stones to leach fury, so I make the threshold check, and he fails (HOW?) and runs right into Krueger. Krueger takes a hard hit, but I transfer it to the Gorax. Krueger is not in good shape.

At this point, I find myself having to deal with his beasts that I've softened up, so I decided to start using my spells and the Stone Keeper, along with Blackclad wayfarer, to play the range game and take his beasts down. I manage to kill one of his beasts, and I use my shifting stones (with one down as Sam killed one, to heal Krueger a little bit.)

Sam decides to kill my Gallows Grove, which I'm fine with as he used a much more expensive model to do it with. He also kills the Stone Keeper.

My next turn is decided fairly easy, as Naaresh had moved a little closer to the forest that Krueger was in, so I decide to move the Wayfarer up, make a spray on Naaresh, hit, and do some damage as he has no fury open. Krueger moves up, and shoots Naaresh with his lightning bolt twice, boosting to hit and damage. It kills Naaresh, and I win the game.

Krueger is behind the trees.

Overall, we had a great day, and I can't wait to see what this next league week will bring.

Until next time,

This post is a few days late, and won't be as detailed as it should because I've lost quite a few of the details. Sorry about that, but I've had a busy week.

The first game is against eSam and his Trollbloods. The table was very much in favor, with lots of terrain set up for me to take adavantage of. The hills we had took extra movement to get up, so moving over hills would take him just a little bit more effort than it would from me.

Sam was playing the basic Trollbloods battlebox, with the 2 Impalers, Axer, and pMadrak. I am running my custom battle box again, with eKrueger, a Warpwolf Stalker, and a Gorax.

Turn one consisted of both armies moving up, with Sam putting Pathfinder on all his dudes. Not what I wanted. I did Storm Wall to cut down on his ranged attacks.

We then spent the next few turns moving into combat, with me feating defensively to make sure I didn't get a beast to the face. Eventually, Madrak was within spell range, so I telekinesised and charge with the Warpwolf, killing him.

The game with Bernie had me facing Commander Adept Nemo, a warcaster I've heard of before but never played.
Our table was set by alternating terrain, so it was initially a giant cluster of nasty, but we eventually got it fixed. Here's the table after turn 1:

The game was mostly moving toward each other, with me attempting to flank hard to the left. Bernie put the forest between us, and while I can go through them easily, I can't see through them. I ended up popping my feat to stop his jacks from charging next turn, but moved Nemo a little too far out. Bernie came in, killed my Warpwolf, and left me with only the Gorax. I decided to go for the assassination with the Gorax, so I telekinesised his jack out of the way, but it took me two times to do it. I forced the Gorax to charge, but ended up a half inch short. His heavy came in and wrecked Krueger. I lost.
Sorry for the delayed posts, and my League Update post with come up soon. It's almost time for another league learnings as well.

As I said in my previous post, I had a game with Mike Saturday, with his Legion going against my Circle.
Mike's List is this:

Saeryn and Rhyas, Talons of Everblight
Nephilim Bloodseer
Angelius
Shredder

My list was the same as it has been for League Week 1,
Krueger the Stormlord
Warpwolf Stalker
Gorax

Mike and I divided the terrain evenly and set it out as we wished on our sides. Mike decided to go first, and I deployed first. At the end of deployment, things looked like this:

(The green blobs are forests, by the way)

I was hoping to take advantage of the forests as much as possible, but I realize legion can see, run, and charge through everything that I can, so I don't really have the advantage that I normally have. Legion is a problem for Circle, and with Mike piloting it it's going to get intense very quick.

Mike's first turn was all about advancing, so at this point 2 of his beasts are in the forest, one is on the terrain with the building, and his warlocks are in the gap between the 2.

My turn has the Warpwolf riling and running up to the edge of the forest, and the Gorax riling and running up a little closer to the building in the middle. Krueger flew up and cast Storm Wall, hoping to stop any ranged attacks. He also cast Lightning Storm, creating the AoE hoping to deter any movement too close for now.

Turn 3 for Mike was moving farther up, keeping all of his upkeeps up, and attempting to shoot Krueger. The range wasn't quite there though. I knew that he was getting in position to charge on the next turn.
Given that Mike was getting into charge range, I decided to move up, hoping that I can line up the next turn for my Telekinesis and Charge maneuver. However, I need to stop Mike from being able to charge or engage me for that to work. So, everyone moves up, and I decide to feat. I decide to leave as much fury on Krueger as I can. With the speed penalty, Mike's models can't run or charge, so I may have another turn to line things up. However, everything is just a little farther away now, so if he doesn't move up close enough I'll have trouble getting there. Here's how things looked:

Turn 4 had Mike bringing in his Bloodseer, and using him as a way to not only make me pay a point of health to cast spells with Psychic Vampire from his Warlocks but also have to pay an extra fury to cast them. A warlock like Krueger likes to use his spells. Beyond that, Mike's turn was marked by casting spells (most of which I can't remember now - Sorry!)
My turn was going to be all about the turn and charge but I realized very quickly that wouldn't happen. So, I decided to kill something at least. The Bloodseer was mine. I Telekinesised it closer, and turned it around, and let the Warpwolf do it's job. It took it out pretty quickly. I also moved the Gorax a little closer in case I needed to cast Primal on my next turn to kill something.

Turn 5 was where things got bad. For me.
Mike charged with his Angelius, targeting the Warpwolf, but missed on most of his attacks, barely hurting it. Then, mike charged with the Shredder, hitting the Gorax but not doing too much. At this point, both the Gorax and Warpwolf have a fury, with the Gorax being full and the Warpwolf lacking one. Rhyas charges in, targeting Krueger. Her first attacks hits Krueger for 5. She proceeds to do 8 damage on one swing to Krueger, which I happily transfer. That's the last one I can do, however. Mike then proceeds to flashing blade the Gorax, Krueger, and Warpwolf, killing both Krueger's beasts before finally cutting the Stormlord down.

A victory for Mike!

I'm not mad about the loss, as Mike is one of the (if not the) best players in our group, and Legion is a very bad matchup anyway. I made play mistakes, but we all do.

Either way, it was a good game and a great learning experience.

Until next time,

After a busy 2 weeks, I'm finally able to post again. Sadly we have had to delay the next league meeting by a week, so the 27th we'll all be together playing again. I have a geology field trip so I'll be going late, so expect fewer games on the League day post.

Today (Actually yesterday) though, we have a special treat:

a JOSH VS. JOSH GRUDGE MATCH

Today has my Circle Orboros facing off against Josh's Khador. We had Brian do the terrain for us, and I won the roll to determine which side I was on. I decided to take the side that would allow me to use the terrain for as long as I could.

Going into the matchup I was actually a little worried about Sorscha's feat, as it can make my models stationary for her to come in and wail on them with herself or her jacks, and also having to force my beasts to move would hurt any boosting I needed to do on a charge, as I would only get one reliable boost to hit and one for extra damage. Needless to say I needed to be careful.

I forgot to take a picture of the initial setup, but here is the middle of Josh's 1st turn:

As you can see, I was trying to move up to take advantage of the cover. If his jacks can't see me, they can't charge, so any kind of line of sight blocking I can do will help. I'm trying to flank him hard, and I realize just how slow his jacks are. Seriously. This is coming from a guy who has a Khador army. I played Khador for the first League. And now I realize how just how much they are outpaced by other armies. I suppose that's why they don't use their jacks all that much.

I proceed to move up through the open area between the forests, and decided to throw out one of Krueger's Lightning Storm AoEs between the forest and the wall. I know that against a Khador jack the damage roll will be dice minus 10 but I'm hoping that I can at least scare him from coming through it. The rest of my second turn is spent moving my warpwolf next to the far forest (near the tropical tree) and my Gorax move up to the middle of the open area to run/charge through the gap if I need support.

Josh moves up a little closer to the wall, and I realize that on his next turn, if I don't get there, he will be able to feat and charge my Warpwolf or go after Krueger. He also shoots at Krueger but misses. It deviates, but I didn't cast Storm Wall so I can't choose where it goes. It still deviates off Krueger and doesn't catch anything else.

At this point, I decide to move Krueger into a position to feat, as I need to stop them from charging or running the next turn. Krueger goes up, feats, and Sorscha and her jacks are now 3 inches back, and since they can't charge or run his jacks will be able to move a wopping 3 inches. Krueger also Telekinesises himself into a postition that he can see the Warpwolf to Telekinesis it and move it ever so slightly up. Krueger tries to shoot with a boost but misses it. Then the Warpwolf riles and runs, but doesn't quite move up all the way, being careful to stay 3 inches away from the closest jack. My Gorax also moves up to be able to support the Warpwolf with Primal when I go in for the kill. Josh then proceeds to move a little closer, but does not feat as his Line of Sight is blocked to all of my models.

My next turn, Krueger moves a little closer to the Juggernaut, Telekinesises it to get it out of the way, and also turns it around to avoid any charges. The Gorax casts primal on the Warpwolf. The Warpwolf charges Sorscha, makes it, and proceeds to hit with boosted attack roll. I then forgot that charges have boosted damage, so I force him to boost. It does quite a bit of damage, leaving her with a little less than half her boxes. Then I swing with the claw, which is dice minus 2 thanks to her camping all of her focus, along with Primal and warping strength on the Warpwolf. It leaves her with one box as I don't boost the damage, as I stupidly decided to buy another. It was unboostable, and the attack misses. My warpwolf is left out in the open.

Josh decided to leave Sorscha where she was, as he couldn't really risk the free strike. Sorscha feats to make the Warpwolf easier to hit, but Krueger and the Gorax are out of his Line of Sight. He spends the majority of the focus he didn't allocate to boost and buy attacks on the Warpwolf, doing a ton of damage. His Juggernaut then walks behind it and finishes it off. His Destroyer then moves up to hit the Gorax. It doesn't do very much.

At this point, my usual assassination tool is gone, but I decide to go for Krueger's ranged assassination, so I leach fury from the Gorax (adding it to what I reaved from the Warpwolf) going to full fury, and fly up about 5 inches from Sorscha. Krueger boosts to hit, makes it, then boosts the damage on the shot, killing Sorscha and winning the game.

Overall, it was a good game. Josh had me in a tough spot if I couldn't kill Sorscha. Any of his jacks could have killed Krueger the next turn with little issue.

A good time was had by all, but I've learned that I need to remember charges boost the first attacks damage for free and I need to remember that it's better to boost an attack that hits rather than buy another one that doesn't have the best chance.

Today I'm playing Mike, so look forward to reading about that later.

Until then,

Since I last posted an update, our Journeyman League is now underway! As the first day, it went great, and it was a lot easier to run than I anticipated. We actually have 3 new players, Josh2, Sam2, and Gabe. Before the League veterans got there (save Mike, Mychaela and Myself) we showed Josh and Gabe how to play. Gabe played my Menoth and was tutored by Mike, and Josh and I teamed up with Khador. Luckily Josh had pretty well learned the rules before the game started so we could just talk tactics. Sadly, Mike is a better coach than I am, so Gabe took the win and the Josh Squad was left in defeat.

For the next game, it was finally time for me to continue my grudge match with Sam1, so my Circle faced off against his Skorne. We played on the same table as Josh and Gabe, and I quickly learned that playing on that table was not to my advantage. I was out in the open for the entire game, and I didn't really stand a chance against the Skorne in a fair fight. I had no rough terrain to slow him down either. I misapplied my Warpwolf and 2 of his light beasts took him down. Krueger moved up to the middle of the table and his heavy warbeast got to do his countercharge right into Krueger. (I forgot he had that.) That hurt pretty well, but most of the attacks missed at least. With my warpwolf gone, and the Gorax way to the left, Krueger was basically helpless, so I was forced to pass the turn to him, and he charged with his beasts and end Krueger. First game of the league is a loss.

Second game I played Kris in a rematch of our practice game, and this game went much better than last time. I moved my army pretty quickly on top of a rough terrain hill, making it hard for him to shoot me or even try to engage directly. I lined my Warpwolf up to intercept Scaverous about halfway, and put Krueger where he would be safe but also be able to line up next turn for Telekinesis. Kris moved up, as I hoped he would, I hit Scaverous with Telekinesis, moved him up and turned him around, forced the Gorax to cast Primal on the Warpwolf, and charged in the back arc at an effective MAT 10 and P+S 20 with Warp Strength. Scaverous fell pretty quickly. A Win for the second game.

For my next game, after our Dinner break, I played Courtney, and I felt confident going in as I had beaten her caster before, and Krueger has pretty good answers to ranged attacks. I lined up Krueger and the Gorax in the middle and had the Warpwolf flank hard to the left. There was some rough terrain so I felt confident that I was pretty safe. Courtney moved her Jacks a little to close for comfort, and blocked my charge lane, so I feated and pushed them back, stopping a charge the next turn and opening up my lane. I moved Krueger up to telekinesis her caster, it hits, but I make a fatal mistake. When I telekinesised her, I forgot to turn her around for the back strike. It was going to be a lot hard for the Warpwolf to hit. Another issue is that I forgot to position my Gorax very well the turn prior, so I, even with movement, was out of range for Primal. I tried the charge anyway. The first attack hit but not as strong as I needed, so I was relying on the second hit to do the damage I needed. It did, and Courtney's caster was dead with my Fury maxed out having boosted everything I could. However, I had forgotten that the claw that the Warpwolf has does not have reach, so the attack was illegal as I was 2 inches away. I'm pretty glad I remembered. I pass the turn to Courtney, knowing what would happen, and Krueger goes down. A loss for the second game, but one that I can deal with given that I almost cheated (Sorry Courtney!).

Over the next few (twelve) weeks, I will be doing posts about our WarmaHordes Journeyman League. These post will be divided into a few different loose categories, like that of Hobby Posts (as I go for the paint patch), Battle Reports (Where I talk about my games I've played that week) and League Learnings (reflective pieces on what I've learned about my army, thoughts on lists, and other things I find enlightening).

So, without further ado, my first League Learnings!

On Saturday, Mychaela and I met up with Kris and Courtney to practice for the League and try out our lists. It was also practice with fury management given that I'm usually a Warmachine player. So, here's my list of League Learnings:

1) Hordes is not "broken".

When I first started playing Warmachine, I dreaded playing against Hordes, as I thought that the deck was stacked against me before the game even started. I thought warbeasts were too powerful, able to do too much with no limits.

I was wrong. Warbeasts have their own downsides. You must leach fury from them or run the risk of having one frenzy and losing it for a turn. This would never happen with a 'Jack. Also, you must push your Warbeasts to a point, as you risk not having enough Fury to cast spells. The system balances out nicely.

2) Order of Activation is important
Listen, I get it. I should have learned this a long time ago. I still make mistakes though. We all do.

3) If you know the rules, your game is expanded...greatly.
While playing Kris, I needed to use my Gorax to put some hurt on Scaverous so that I could take him down with Krueger (provided I survived his next activation) or try to kill him with the Gorax. Since he had taken out my Gorax's Spirit I thought that I could not possibly do enough damage to Scaverous given that I could not force him. Luckily, I remembered that Warlocks can heal their Warbeasts with Fury, and I did just that. I got his Spirit back (should have also done the Mind, but eh). I knew the rules, and I had more options.

4) Krueger is the perfect warlock for me
I like the dude. His movement shenanigans are awesome. Being able to Telekinesis Courtney's caster around to get back strikes, and being able to cast Gallows to push stuff in really helps. Assassinations are great with the whole Turn with Telekinesis while bringing in closer, then let pump up the Warpwolf Stalker and let him run in for huge damage. I know it won't work every time, but it sure is fun. Beyond assassination potential, the ability to push back the enemy and slow them down will be great on scenario. Krueger is great.

Well, that's all for now folks as we get ready for the first week of league.

Until next time,

After much delay, I can finally post my first hobby blog! With the start of our local gaming group's Journeyman League (which I'm running!) in the next couple of weeks, I've been really looking for things that I could do to make the league more interesting. Our league is already a little atypical as I am allowing veteran players to pick their own casters and battlegroups as opposed to being limited to the battle box (or the few alternatives) like normal. Of course we've had to put in place some restrictions for the initial battlegroup, as those are the battlegroups the players will be stuck with until week 6. Another unorthodox decision we've made is to make the league weeks actually 2 weeks, as this gives people more time to get in games even if their schedule is busy (though we are actually just carrying this over from last league). Either way, I've had an idea in my mind for a project since last league, and thought this league would be the perfect time to try it, and that idea is.......

MINEFIELDS!

Yes, you read that right, minefields! Ever since last league, when I was just starting my WarmaHordes journey, I've had the idea to make some minefields as WarmaHordes terrain. I came across a tutorial for these minefields on the Privateer Press website while looking at potential armies, and have wanted to make them ever since. Well here, a year later, I've finally done it, and it was a fun learning experience and one that I definitely learned a lot from.

To start, I did not have the recommended hardboard that they used in the Privateer Press demo, instead using 2 pieces of plasticard glued together and cut out. Of course, the second piece was not the exact same shape as the first, but plenty of sanding and shaving fixed that. I then proceeded to sand it down so that glue would stick to the top, and added the mines (Cygnar Halfjack mines) with superglue. Then I coated it in glue and dropped it down into my special basing mix (All Purpose Sand from Lowe's with those cork basing "rocks" mixed in). After that, I re-glued and re-coated the places that still had bare spots. The end result looked like this:

At this stage, the minefield was dubbed "the Potato" by Kris, but I can see why. Next came the priming and painting stage, which was by far the easiest stage. I primed the minefield black with the remains of a can of Black Duplicolor Sandable Primer, which is my goto primer on just about any surface. After letting it dry for about a day, I started the drybrushing of parts of the minefield with GW's Mournfang Brown, my go to leather and dirt color. (There are probably better colors out there but I like the saturation it offers to the browns.) In the areas I didn't drybrush, I dabbed a thin mixture of water and paint, hoping to get an uneven color to that of the drybrushed areas. The end result of this stage was this:

The Potato was now the Baked Potato. Next came flocking and painting the mines, which was fairly simple. I brushed glue where I wanted to have grass and added the flocking. I painted the mines with GW's Leadbelcher, and then added a 50/50 wash of Nuln Oil and Vallejo's Brown Wash. The mix really helped the mines look liked they've been buried and exposed to a muddy field. I then drybrushed over that with Leadbelcher just to bring out the raised edges. After this, the minefield looked like this:

However, I wasn't happy with the way the grass looked, and decided to make it look a bit more organic, adding more to brake up the oblong shapes. I forgot to take a picture, and thusly you'll see it a little later.

Next came the sign reading "DANGER" and "MINES". This was pretty easy to make after a quit trip to Hobby Lobby (with a little Panda Express along the way). I cut up some small basswood pieces to about an inch and arranged and glued them to make a sign, then painted over with Vallejo's Leather Brown paint (which oddly enough I prefer for wood.) Then I (very carefully!) painted DANGER and MINES on the sign with black paint. That was probably the hardest part of the entire project, as I found it hard to make the letters that small. After this step, I had this:

Next came the final step, which was adding the barbed wire and the associated posts to the minefield, which was easy. All I had to do was make 2 X's out of basswood, paint them like I did above, and then coil the barbed wire (The Army Painter kind) and glue it to them. This was all added to the field with superglue. This resulted in my final product like so:

And thusly my Minefields were complete. I must say that I'm happy with how they turned out, and especially since it was my first foray into making terrain. I hope they'll add a dynamic (and explosive!) element to our games.

I hope you've enjoyed this project blog, and I hope you learned something or were inspired. For the original tutorial on the minefields, you can go to http://privateerpress.com/hobby/hobby-blog/minefields
Until next time,
Happy Hobbying!

P.S. I also worked on the flyers for the WarmaHordes League this week, and this was the end result:

Hopefully that can help spread the word about our league. Anyway, thanks again for reading! May your brushes always keep their points!

Today I'm going to be doing a mini blog, as my project isn't finished yet and I don't really have much else to report right now. As such, I thought it might be nice to quickly talk about the name of my blog: The Ordinary Wargamer. Why ordinary? Simply, I picked Ordinary because I am just that. I'm not a championship winning tournament player (in fact, I'm lucky if I win a game), nor am I professional level painter. I'm just a guy who likes to paint models and play wargames. I like to have fun. Of course I look at lists and read tactics and look up painting tips, but don't we all? I'm just your average, normal wargamer, here to roll some dice and enjoy life.

Until next time, Happy Hobbying!

My name is Josh, and I've been wargaming and modeling since the fall of 2013. I started out with Warhammer 40K, but I've since branched out into Warmachine, Hordes, Infinity, X-Wing, and Bolt Action. I also paint minis for DnD and other roleplaying games when I feel like trying out new techniques.

I've always wanted to do a blog pertaining to wargaming and the hobby, and a buddy's blog inspired to me to finally start one (Thanks Kris!). This blog will be updated as often as I can, as I am a student and work so I have a pretty busy schedule.

For a small update on my hobby life at the moment, I've been selected in my local gaming group to run our Warmahordes Journeyman League this year. This came as a shock to me as I just joined the gaming group last year, and started Warmahordes via last year's league. We've slated to start February 6th, so I've been in the process of making flyers to hang around campus and at the local comic store, Cavalier Comics. So, if you are in the Wise area and would like to join us for some slow-grow Journeyman League action, come out at 1 that day and we'll be happy to have you.

For my next blog, I'm going to post about a little project I've been working on for the league.

Until then, Happy Hobbying!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14311156675349263438noreply@blogger.com0
